A telecom site that fits inside a UK Clean Air Zone

Mitie Telecom needed firm power at an off-grid telecom site sitting inside a UK Clean Air Zone - meaning both emissions and noise had to comply with stricter-than-default urban limits.

The challenge

The site was inside a UK Clean Air Zone - diesel was effectively excluded by the combination of emissions and noise restrictions. A solar-only solution couldn't deliver the firm power profile required, and grid extension was not a viable option.

Mitie needed a generator that could deliver continuous prime power inside CAZ rules, without acoustic enclosures or special permitting.

The solution

Mitie deployed a Bladon MTG12 as the firm-power layer in a hybrid configuration with solar PV and battery storage. The MTG's emissions profile (exceeds eu stage v emissions limits) and its 60 dB LPA at 10 m acoustic profile met the CAZ requirements without additional mitigation.

Switching the MTG to HVO further reduced scope-1 emissions, providing additional headroom against tightening regulation.

The site went live and has remained operational without breach of CAZ emissions or noise rules. It demonstrates a practical, off-the-shelf path for telecom operators with sites inside increasingly common urban clean-air zones.

The deployment is also a reference point for similar sites in noise-sensitive locations near homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.
